Instrumentation for Monitoring Dynamic Flow Parameters in Engines.

Abstract

The report describes work performed on the study of instrumentation for monitoring flow variables in engines. Hot wire and hot film systems were studied for use in measuring fluid velocity. Also, small pressure probes, for use in remote monitoring of dynamic pressures, were investigated. Finally, a special technique for reducing pressure probe data was developed. The hot wire and hot film work demonstrated the need for individual calibration of probes, since results show that traditional assumptions of the heat transfer relation are not entirely correct and can lead to inaccurate results. The pressure probe investigation showed that this technique can be successfully used for monitoring dynamic pressures within an engine. An analog data reduction scheme was developed which allows cancellation of the dynamic distortion caused by the probe transmission line. (Author)
