XM31 Reefing Line Cutter, Propellant Actuated with Settable Mechanical Time Delay,

Abstract

This report summarizes exploratory development conducted on the XM31 Settable Delay Reefing Line Cutter. Six units, which combine a modified M564 projectile fuze and an M9 type reefing line cutter, were designed and fabricated. Extensive tests were conducted to assure the compatibility of firing pin energy with the selected primer, to establish the actuation pull force, and to check the cutter function and timer accuracy. The testing of these subcomponents culminated with a general check of the cutter at Frankford Arsenal under various environmental conditions. Satisfactory results were obtained and sixty prototype units were delivered to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for user test and evaluation. (Author)
