Hydrodynamic Design and Testing of HYSURCH Sensor Body.
Abstract
A cavitation-resistant body was developed for the high-speed sounding boat system (HYSURCH). After tests determined an existing fathometer body unsuitable for velocities greater than 25 knots, a new body and strut were designed utilizing a potential flow computer program and model tests in a water tunnel. The body is a streamlined body of revolution 6 ft long and 1 ft in diameter, supported from its midsection aft by a surface-piercing strut of 2.5-ft chord length. Full-scale tests revealed that the body can operate cavitation-free at a depth of 3.5 ft, at velocities up to 45 knots, and at yaw angles up to 4 deg. Although the strut cavitates at small angles of yaw; this noise source should not seriously affect acoustic transducers placed forward of the strut. (Author)
