MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY FOR POLYBENZIMIDAZOLE RESIN IN COMPOSITE STRUCTURES.

Abstract

Successful fabrication process for large- size PBI fiber glass composite structures were established. PBI composite fabrication technology was advanced from the laboratory stage to the manufacturing of large structural components. An advanced tooling concept was implemented in the design and construction of a castable silica ceramic tool containing integral heaters. This tool allowed curing of PBI radome at the required 700 F temperature in an unheated autoclave. Successful bagging materials and bag designs were established for curing the radome at 700 F in the autoclave. Material and fabrication processes specifications were prepared which will allow fabrication of large-size structures from PBI. Electrical and structural designs were generated for a large-size PBI radome structure (10 feet high x 8 feet base width by 0.400 inches thick) with performance requirements typical of advanced aircraft that will operate above Mach 3.
