Some Problems Concerning Airplanes with Short Start and Landing Distances,
Abstract
Passenger planes with short start and landing distances are becoming progressively more important in the rapidly growing air transportation industry. The article deals with certain problems concerning devices which increase the lift capacity of wings. The report describes the design of these devices in relation to the ensuing increase in the maximum lift coefficient, and discusses the limitations of their use due to the limitations of the increase in lift capacity and due to the drop in lateral navigability which occurs due to the reduction in the minimum flight speed. The drop in navigability can be prevented by controlling the boundary layer and by directly using the power of the engines for steering the airplane. (Author)
