Controllable Development of Silver Halide Emulsions.

Abstract

Studies were conducted on the factors influencing development control by selected types of photographic development accelerators and inhibitors. A large number of developing solutions were formulated and evaluated as first or second developers in a two-step development of Kodak Aerial Film 3404. Conditions for producing characteristic curves with dual gammas were investigated. Phenidone-hydroquinone solutions containing equal concentrations (0.01 M) of these developing agents produced satisfactory dual-gamma responses when used as first developers with either Ethol 90 or a phenidone-hydroquinone developer of lower phenidone content as second developer. Polyethylene glycol 1500 and a polyethoxylated quaternary ammonium salt (Ethoquad C/12, Armour Industrial Chemical Co.) were used as accelerators with these solutions and 6-nitrobenzimidazole nitrate as inhibitor.
