A Critical Summary of Sea Surface Heat Exchange Equations.

Abstract

The manuscript presents an evaluation of relationships that have been advanced for computation of total heat flux at the sea surface--the so-called heat budget equations. The vast majority of studies made to date have relied on statistical analysis of long-time series, which significantly limits reliable application for periods less than 24 hours. Equations are recommended for the various factors in radiative, evaporative, and sensible heat flux that appear most applicable to short-term computation. Methods for distribution of heat in the water column are also discussed. (Author)
