Yarn and Tape Tensile Properties in Vacuum.

Abstract

The tensile properties of nylon, Dacron, Nomex, PBI (polybenzimidazole),X-101 (aromatic polyamide), PRD-14 (polyimide), and fiberglass yarn were determined in vacuum at 70 F after 7-10 day and 45 day vacuum exposures. The tensile strengths of 9/ l6 inch wide nylon, Dacron and Nomex tape were also measured in vacuum after 7 day exposures. With several notable exceptions, long term exposures gen-erally do not have a large effect on the tensile proper-ties of polymeric yarns. The tensile modulus of nylon and X-101 yarn, the rupture elongation of Nomex yarn, and the modulus and rupture elongation of Dacron and PRD-14 yarn in vacuum differ by 10 to 25% from their properties in 14.7psia, 70 F, 65% RH in air. The othertensile properties of these yarns and the properties of PBI yarn in vacuum differ from the properties in air by less than 10% and in most instances by less than 5%. The tensile strength of fiberglass yarn in vacuum is as much as 39% greater and the rupture elongation, 25% greater than in air. The rupture load of the 9/16 inch nylon, Dacron and Nomex tapes are 2 to 7 1/2% GREATER IN VACUUM THAN IN AIR. (Author-PL)
