Studies in Manual Target Designation: Isometric Controls,

Abstract

This document reports a series of tests in which operators used one of three force (isometric) controls to position a ring cursor over a dot target presented on a 17-inch 1000-line television monitor. Optimal parameters were first established for each of the three controls: a hand-operated grip, a finger-operated stick, and a thumb-operated disk control. A final test compared the three controls with respect to designation error and the finger control was found to be slightly better than the other two. An important auxiliary finding was that designation error increases markedly when the target is available less than about ten seconds. (Author)
