An Electronic System for Precise Timing and Firing Control of Explosive Tests.

Abstract

A Timing and Firing (T and F) system was designed, constructed, and operated by the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station for the Mine Shaft series of high-explosive detonations. Events Mine Under, Mine Ore, Mineral Lode, and Mineral Rock were fired on a test site near Cedar City, Utah, during the fall of 1968 and late summer of 1969. The design, based on state-of-the-art electronic techniques, achieved a high degree of precision in generating timing signals and firing charges with known relationship to world time. This report describes the system and its functional components and also describes the timing services provided to the various experimenters involved in the four shots of the Mine Shaft series.
