Effects of Tarsalectomy and Antennectomy on Spiracular Behavior in Aedes Triseriatus,
Abstract
The behaviour of the thoracic spiracular valves was observed in antennectomized, tarsalectomized, and unoperated control groups of adult female Aedes triseriatus. Although antennectomy had no effects, tarsalectomy significantly reduced magnitude and duration of spiracular opening. Further observations suggested no gas exchange via the exposed tracheae of ablated tarsi. Carbon dioxide receptors on the tarsi were not involved with spiracular behavior, and it was postulated that tarsal ablation perphaps initiated an inhibitory reflex resulting in greater spiracular control.
