Low Cost S-Band Transmitter Tube for Phased Array Radars.

Abstract

The goal of the program is to experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of a traveling wave tube whose manufacturing cost will be less than $100 with performance suitable for use in multi-element phased array radars. The tube is being developed to meet the requirements of U.S. Army Electronics Command Technical Guidelines MW-66 under contract to DAAB07-69-C-0333. The low cost of the tube is achieved by using a radically different approach. All the tube elements, including focusing structure, microwave interaction structure, collector, and electrical and microwave connections are printed on flat ceramic sheets. In this way, accurate microwave and focusing circuits are obtained at a small fraction of the cost of machining such circuits. Microwave power is generated in the conventional way by the interaction between the printed microwave circuit and the sheet electron beam. (Author)
