Feasibility Study of the M-21 Programmed-Drum Arresting Gear Deadload and Airframe/Barricade Arrestments.

Abstract

This program was conducted to determine the feasibility of using the M-21 programmed-drum arresting gear as a shipboard arresting-gear model. ON-CENTER, 12-1/2-foot OFF-CENTER, and 15-foot OFF-CENTER arrestments were conducted using selective deadload weights ranging from 12,000 to 50,000 pounds. Based on the highly satisfactory results obtained from deadload testing, the programmed drum was configured for barricade arrestments. Barricade arrestments of a 16,000-pound F-1E airframe and a 50,000-pound A-3A airframe were successfully conducted 12-1/2 feet OFF-CENTER. Torque characteristics of the programmed-drum arresting gear were accurately defined during 12-1/2-foot OFF-CENTER arrestments of deadloads. Results obtained from these tests can be directly applied to a future design for an optimum cable-drum profile. The results of both deadload and airframe arrestments are presented in this report along with a comparison of deadload performance with the Mark 7 Mod 3 arresting gear. Results of the entire program are very promising, and an in-depth study should be conducted to consider developing a shipboard arresting-gear model. (Author)
