Aircraft Weapon Release Systems and Intervalometer Study.

Abstract

The intent of this effort was to analyze and study the intervalometers utilized in a number of present and future aircraft systems to ascertain if there were problem areas, and if so, determine what future efforts should be made to advance the state-of-the-art. As the study advanced it became increasingly evident that the weapon release intervalometer has merged into, and become an integral part of the weapon release sysem and has lost the 'black box' concept and taken on a system 'function' concept. Therefore, the scope of this study was enlarged to include, where necessary, the total weapon release system concept. It was determined from the study that the existing and near-future aircraft weapon release systems are sophisticated and efficient and that any effort to improve the techniques that are utilized would be futile at this time. Future Air Force efforts should be concentrated toward designing, building, and prototyping solid-state weapon release systems utilizing modern-day components and techniques which will interface with present and future aircraft systems to provide many desired capabilities.
