Experimental Research on Collisions of Heavy Particles at Energies up to 2 Mev.

Abstract

Collision properties of heavy ions were studied over the energy range 30 kev to 2 Mev by four types of experiments. The first study was measurement of the electron capture and loss cross section of Ne(+), Kr(+), and Ba(+2) in collision with N2, O2, Ne, and Ar. Results for stripping of electrons from the netural atoms of Ne and Kr were deduced from the data as well. Comparison with theoretical predictions and experimental results was made. The second type study was similar to the first but used atomic oxygen as the target gas. The primary ions for measurement of sigma(1n) were N(+), O(+), Ar(+), Kr(+), Xe(+), Al(+), K(+), Fe(+), Ba(+), and Ba(+2). The third study made measurements of the equilibrium charge fractions of Ne(+) and Kr(+) on N2, O2, Ne, and Ar. The fourth study measured the cross sections for exciting the (O,O) transition of the first negative bands of N2(+) at 3914 A upon impact of H2(+), Ne(+), Kr(+), and Al(+) on N2. (Author)
