The Impact of Fluidics on Advanced Avionics Systems. Volume I. Feasibility Analysis.
Abstract
The impact was evaluated by an analytic determination of the kinds of fluidic systems and components which show promise for fighter aircraft applications and by rating their development potential. A group of 16 avionic systems were selected as typical for a fighter aircraft at the outset of the investigation. The feasibility analysis results indicated that only eight of the sixteen systems and one subsystem could, if configured using fluidic elements exclusively or primarily, perform the system function satisfactorily. The practicality analysis results indicated that seven of the eight remaining systems and the subsystem could meet typical fighter aircraft constraints of a practical nature (size, reliability, interfacing, etc.) if mechanized primarily with fluidic elements. The ratings of the development potential of the remaining systems and subsystem indicated that some of them had a high potential for successful development and application while others had a lower potential due to more difficult development problems and/or a less apparent opportunity for application. The fluidic components needing development were identified and given a priority rating of high, medium or low. The ratings were based on a judgment of the component's worth to the system or systems it was required for and on an evaluation of the component's intrinsic worth and its development problems.
