Satellite Experiments for D-Region Simulation Studies of High-Altitude Nuclear Weapons Effects.

Abstract

The report covers the design, development and construction phase of a satellite measurement program to investigate the ionization characteristics and the electron loss rates in the D-region ionosphere and, to a lesser extent, the investigations of the E- and F-region ionospheric characteristics. The design, development and calibration of solar flare particle detectors, relativistic electron detectors and auroral particle detectors is described and test results are presented. An electromagnetic propagation experiment and the associate equipment for D-region ionosphere studies is discussed and the results of laboratory tests are presented. (Author)
