Investigation of Transient-Response Computation for Simple Radar Targets.

Abstract

A computer program capable of producing printed or plotted representations of the transient response of a target observed by a high-resolution radar has been developed. A variety of waveforms, weighting functions and targets can be assumed. Targets included are: pair of point scatterers, sphere, axially viewed right-circular cone having flat or spherical base, flat plate observed with radar having its electric vector perpendicular to the edge of the plate, right-circular cylinder and rectangular cylinder (of which the cube is the special case of main interest). Examples of the transient responses of these targets are given. For several targets suitable formulations for the transfer functions could not be obtained, but scattering analyses were performed that extended our understanding of the processes involved. These bodies include the flat plate at near-grazing angles of incidence, the right-circular cone at small angles of incidence, and the hemisphere-capped cylinder. An analysis showing that the transient response of a radar using a modulated sinusoid is the same as the transient response obtained from a chirp or an FM/CW radar has also been performed. The program developed here, therefore, applies to chirp and FM/CW radars. (Author)
