Geoelectric Reconnaissance of the Laguna Joyuda Area at Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.

Abstract

A program of both field and laboratory measurement of the electrical properties of the upper 3 meters of soil of a site near Laguna Joyuda, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, were undertaken to determine the potential utility of the site as a test area. Continuous samples were collected for laboratory measurement and computation of the frequency dependence of the electromagnetic parameters in the 50 to 500 MHz range. Comparative measurements by both conventional Wenner array and an electromagnetic induction method produced compatible results, but lacked the detail required. The results of the study indicate the soil lies in thinly developed layers which are believed to parallel the residual development. It is inferred that crop fertilization has superimposed an effect on the electrical properties of the soil and are particularly noticeable in the shallow depressions and on the less well-drained slopes. Conductivities in the range of 1 to 15 mmhos/meter were encountered. Attenuation values range from approximately 1 to 11 db/meter. Although the site is considered to be somewhat a typical of the general range of electromagnetic parameters encountered in Puerto Rico, the computed values indicate suitable utility of the site as an electromagnetic test area.
