On the Performance-Index Modeling of Digital Communication Channels.
Abstract
A literature survey of mathematical models and statistical error studies for characterizing digital data communication channels is presented. The models considered are those categorized as performance-index models, that is models in which all signal processing operations are lumped into the channel model, and all error effects are represented by an error sequence which is synchronously added to the channel input symbol sequence to produce the channel output symbol sequence. A summary was made of the available statistical formats in several representative error studies on telephone channels, a low frequency radio channel, high frequency radio channels, and a multiple-link channel. Channel models examined included the models proposed by Jayant, Mandelbrot, Mertz, Gilbert, Elliott, Berkovits, Fritchman, McCullough, Munter and Wolf. It was found that although many different statistical formats were used in the error studies to try to describe the characteristics of error bursts, almost all of the model builders have used the statistic of relative frequency of intererror intervals to determine the parameters in their models. A time-variant model is proposed, along with several other comments regarding possible future work. (Author)
