Ion Collection by an Electrostatic Probe in a Jet Exhaust.

Abstract

Langmuir probes were mounted transverse to the flow in the jet exhaust plane of a J-57 turbojet engine. These probes were operated in the ion-collection mode and measurements were made of charged particle number densities, gas temperature, and floating potential. A computer program was used to calculate critical engine performance parameters from basic measurements, such as pressure, gas temperature and thrust, obtained from the experiments. A limiting case theory corresponding to large values of electric field Reynolds number was formulated and used for the reduction of probe data. It was found that for the conditions of these experiments the probe data could be used as an indicator of engine efficiency. (Author)
