Two-Stream Instability in a Finite Cylindrical Plasma Confined by Electric and Magnetic Fields.
Abstract
An analytical study of the two-stream instability in a finite, cylindrical Vlasov plasma with Maxwellian distributions is presented. The equation for the scalar potential is solved and boundary conditions are applied to obtain a dispersion relation. The plasma oscillations are azimuthally symmetric and independent of an imposed electric field, but depend on a parameter lambda which is a function of the ratio of wavelength to plasma radius. The unstable beam velocities depend upon geometry and the ion and electron thermal energies. Under appropriate conditions it is not possible to excite the two-stream instability for any beam velocity. (Author)
