Research in German-English Machine Translation on Syntactic Level. Volume I.

Abstract

The report contains a detailed description of research in theoretical linguistics, descriptive linguistics, lexicography and systems design relative to the Linguistics Research System (LRS) for machine translation. The format of context-free grammars with rule schemata and algorithms for processing such grammars was designed in the context of theoretical linguistics. Work in descriptive linguistics concentrated on description of phrasal constructions in German and English. Conversion of surface grammars to subscript grammar format was partly completed. Work in lexicography yielded a preliminary word list of 17,000 German and 10,000 English verb entries including description of their syntactic/semantic environmental requirements. Work in systems design concentrated on conversion of LRS programs from IBM 7040 to CDC 6600-1700. (Author)
