On Estimation of the Additional Settlement Which Resulted from Raising the Embankment on the Peat Land at Kitamura, Hokkaido,

Abstract

Although the embankment on the peat land at Kitamura, Kutchian-gun, Hokkaido, is low (only 2.5 to 4 m), a settlement up to 1.2 m had taken place at the worst places within 3 years after the construction and it became necessary to raise the embankment in order to use it. In order to raise the embankment, it was required to estimate an additional settlement to be caused after 10 years by raising the embankment. For this purpose, an estimation of the additional settlement was made in August 1959 at the request of the Kitamura Local Authority. (Author)
