Radiation Damage Study Phase III (RADS III). Damage Assessment Tests Program Wind Tunnel Test Results for Asymmetrically Shaped Slender Blunted Cones at Mach 8.

Abstract

An experimental wind tunnel test program was conducted to determine the trim angle and rolling moment coefficients of several asymmetrically shaped slender blunted cones. Force data were obtained at Mach 8 for symmetric and asymmetric 8-degree half-angle cones at free stream Reynolds numbers per foot of 1,000,000 and 3,000,000. Models were pitched through angles of attack of -4 to +8 degrees. Models were also rolled 90 degrees and pitched through a similar angle range to determine rolling moment coefficients. The results of the study indicate that changes in trim angles due to the imposed asymmetries were insignificant and that the slopes of the rolling moment coefficients were found to be directly related to the degree of asymmetry. The model of largest asymmetry was found to yield a trim angle of approximately 1/4 degree. Slopes of the rolling moment coefficients due to lateral forces were found to vary between 0.000028 and 0.00026 per degree of orthogonal out-of-plane aerodynamic angle-of-attack angle for the asymmetric models tested. The measured values of rolling moment coefficients were found to agree with Newtonian predictions. Thermocouple readings indicated that possible model deformation due to uneven heating at angle of attack were negligible for all tests. (Author)
