Comparison of Sheep Physiological Responses to Pulsed Fission Spectrum or 60 Cobalt Gamma Radiations.
Abstract
Eleven adult female sheep were each exposed to 2500-rad doses (midline air exposure) of 60Co-gamma or pulsed fission spectrum radiations (PFSR). Common physiological responses recorded postirradiation include progressive tachycardia and dyspnea. The 60 Co-gamma irradiated sheep also experienced an early transient hyperthermia, 5 hours postirradiation. The PFSR irradiated sheep demonstrated neurological dysfunction (head bobbing), first observed 50 hours postirradiation. Electrocardiograms and gross pathological evidence did not indicate any marked difference between the PFSR and 60 Co-gamma irradiated sheep. At this dose level, the heart is relatively radioresistant. Major alterations in cardiorespiratory function were pulmonary edema and congestion which led to the recorded tachycardia and observed dyspnea.
