Compressor Sensitivity to Transient and Distorted Transient Flows.

Abstract

An analytical simulation model of compressor dynamic response to spatial and temporal flow disturbances was developed. The model was applied to evaluate the response of the YTF-33 six-stage low pressure compressor and the YTF-33 two-stage front fan to various flow disturbances, for parametric variations in design parameters and nominal operating conditions. Detailed analyses of typical responses established the importance of various flow mechanisms in determining compressor response; specifically, it was found that wave propagation and interaction in the compressor, and the spatial and temporal development of rotating stall exert dominant influences, while dynamic blade-element response is of minor significance in purely transient responses. The results of the model were found to be in qualitative, and in some cases quantitative, agreement with hardware test experience. On this basis, compressor sensitivity trends were related to several design variables. (Author)
