An Investigation of the Operating Characteristics of a CW, Single-Mode, Non-Spiking Ruby Laser.

Abstract

The operating characteristics of a continuous wave, non-spiking ruby laser were investigated. The ruby laser consisted of a resonant reflector laser rod, end-pumped with an argon-ion laser. Non-spiking CW operation was observed for several hours. Single mode oscillation was verified by beam divergence measurements and spectral analysis of the laser output. The temperature of laser oscillation, determined from wavelength shifts of the laser output, was found to be 90K with liquid nitrogen cooling, and 25K with liquid helium cooling. Low frequency optical beats were used to estimate the ruby laser linewidth at 35 KHz. (Author)
