Thermal Mechanical Treatments of Mg-10.8% Y Alloy Sheet.

Abstract

Various thermal mechanical treatments were carried out on a binary age-hardenable magnesium-10.8% yttrium alloy in order to increase its ductility while maintaining high strength. It was found that the highest strengths could not be obtained without introducing cold work. The brittleness which accompanied the cold work could be removed by an anneal prior to aging. By use of the proper annealing treatment, satisfactory strength and ductility levels could be maintained. Annealing in the temperature range 750 to 850F for one hour between cold working and aging gave higher strengths and ductilities than either solution-treated and aged or solution-treated, cold-worked and aged specimens. In particular, elongations of 8 to 10 percent with yield strength of 45,000 psi and ultimate tensile strength of 55,000 psi and strengths as high as 50,000 to 55,000 psi and ultimate tensile strengths as high as 60,000 psi with elongations still in the range from 2 to 5 percent were obtained.
