Investigation of Techniques for the Development of a Seam Inspection Method for Flexible Fuel Storage Container Material.

Abstract

This report describes work done to appraise the relative advantages and disadvantages of various NDT evaluation methods in terms of their potential suitability and applicability for the inspection of seams in flexible fuel storage containers. Urethane and nitrile elastomeric seal materials were investigated by ultrasonic and acoustic, thermographic, optical, and radiofrequency electromagnetic field methods. Use of a photo-thermochromic paint recently made commercially available is the cheapest and most practical method to inspect the seams of flexible storage containers for blister- like voids.
