A Study and Evaluation of Data Management Systems.

Abstract

Studies by various organizations within the Department of the Navy have stressed the need for more responsive and efficient utilization of Automatic Data Processing equipment. In conjunction with these studies, considerable attention has been given to Management Information Systems (MIS) and the many Data Management Systems (DMS) capable of supporting a large integrated MIS. In response to these problems, a recent study by the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) set forth the concept of a Navy Integrated Command/Management Information System (NAICOM/MIS) for the collection, storage, processing and exchange of information. The following objectives for the project were established: (1) Determine the state-of-the-art in DMS development; (2) Survey available DMS's and evaluate them as to their capabilities and potential; and (3) Determine the feasibility of developing a DMS to support NAICOM/MIS.
