Particle Size, Density, Refractive Index, and Infrared Characterization of Fluids and Thickeners.

Abstract

Density, refractive index and infrared spectroscopy data were obtained and tabulated on base oils used in grease preparation, namely, halogenated silicones, non-halogenated silicones, esters, ethers, and a highly refined mineral oil. Infrared spectroscopy and particle size determinations were obtained on a series of organic and inorganic grease thickeners. Specific methods and apparatus used for obtaining density, refractive index and particle size measurements are described and discussed in relation to their suitability and care of operation.
