Thrust Measurement for LANCE Engine Testing, Extended Range LANCE Tests Through Test No. 6922.

Abstract

This report addends Report No. RT-TR-70-5 entitled, Thrust Measurement for LANCE Engine Testing, Extended Range LANCE Tests through Test No. 6922, dated 24 March 1970. The LANCE engine testing was conducted by personnel of the Test and Reliability Evaluation Laboratory, Research and Engineering Directorate, U. S. Army Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. Calibration procedures and analysis techniques detailed in the previous report are not reported. This report does present the results of an ambient temperature condition recalibration of the thrust system performed after it was observed that the stand had shifted as a result of the Test No. 6922 malfunction. Also presented are the results of calibration tests performed at the two temperature extremes of -40 degrees and 150 degrees F. The primary objective of these latter tests of the temperature extremes was to assure that the ambient temperature condition corrections on thrust were valid at these extremes. A secondary evaluation of the load shifts encountered during the transitions from ambient to the temperature extremes is made in an attempt to account for zero shifts observed in engine test data during conditioned temperature tests.
