An Analysis of Theoretical and Empirical Advances in Learning Curve Concepts Since 1966.

Abstract

Theoretical and empirical studies selected from learning curve literature written since 1966 are analyzed and critically appraised. The majority of the studies selected pertain to conceptual extensions in such areas as parameter estimation, curve linearity, and factors which affect the learning curve. Some of the more specific topics analyzed include cost estimate error due to errors in the learning curve parameters, the reliability of the linear hypothesis, and the measurement of perturbations in the learning curve caused by design changes. Empirical data representing the production rate of the C-141 aircraft were used to test a proposed three-dimensional cost model. The three-dimensional model extends the conventional two-dimensional learning curve model by including the production rate as a second independent variable. For the data analyzed, improved statistical results were obtained when the production rate was employed. (Author)
