Investigation of Blast Resistant Water Well Concepts.

Abstract

Elements of a hardened water well were defined and sized to withstand weapon threats up to 5 MT, 3,000 psi in seven different subgrade profiles. Within the objective of achieving cost-effectiveness of the well designs, an attempt was made toward uniformity and simplicity of approach across the range of threat and geological profiles. A test program was carried out to determine the susceptibility of pumps to shock and hydrodynamic pulse. Element costs and total well costs were determined for selected configurations in the different geological profiles. Considerable design and cost data are presented. Recommendations for further research and development are made. (Author)
