Evaluation of a Prototype Shock Mitigating Device.

Abstract

A prototype 'ideal' shock mount was designed and built to investigate the behavior of a particular operating principle. Two opposing preloaded air springs were combined with a hydraulic snubbing device which blocked whichever air spring augmented the deflecting forces at all times. Thus, the full force from one of the springs was always available to oppose the deflection. The prototype was found to behave essentially as planned when tested on a modified High Impact Shock Machine which produced large foundation motions. It accelerated a 320-lb mass at a maximum 8.29 g and deflected 2.5 in. when subjected to a peak foundation velocity of 13.3 ft/sec. (Author)
