Movable Surveillance System (MOSES).

Abstract

Ocean engineering aspects of a large aperture, movable, circular hydrophone array are described. Included are system definition, preliminary design studies, material and corrosion considerations, deployment, sea tests, diving, moorings, and logistics support. The system is composed of a 200-foot diameter circular array of hydrophones which are supported nearly motionless in the water on an ultrastable buoy that operates in such a way that it can be folded along the length of the buoy, which in turn can be towed in the horizontal position to the operating area. The buoy is then ballasted to the vertical position and the array deployed. The system can be operated moored or freefloating. The overall project, which is supported in part by contract NONR 4322(00) with Code 466 of ONR, has as its major objective the development of a research 'test bed' system capable of providing test data to determine feasibility of the MOSES concept through actual sea experiments. The project has spanned the last four years and has been conducted off the coast of Southern California. (Author)
