Penetrant Brightness Measurement Test.

Abstract

The report describes a simple testing technique whereby penetrant brightness can be evaluated. The technique involves the measurement of a single data point, which is the 50% or half brightness level. The penetrant thickness required for reproducible interpretation of brightness is calculated from the ratio of penetrant thickness at half brightness to thickness at full brightness. This level was measured for 10 fluorescent penetrants. Four of the calculated thicknesses are used as limits in a classification system. The system was established to aid in both the selection and quality control of fluorescent penetrants. A test technique is also outlined for nonfluorescing penetrants. (Author)
