Simulator Evaluation of the Flight Profile Indicator.

Abstract

The flight profile indicator (FPI) was evaluated in a treatment by subject analysis of variance experimental design using six helicopter-rated subjects. A 15-degree and a 5-degree instrument approach were flown with and without the FPI, using a simulation of the Norden-developed integrated electronic vertical display (IEVD), vertical speed indicator, and bearing, distance, heading indicator as an instrument panel, and a simulation of the UH-1 as the vehicle using the Honeywell hybrid computer facility. Each subject flew 20 five-minute training flights, and 40 five-minute data gathering flights, 10 per condition. Data from 10 dependent variables, objective and subjective, were gathered. (Author)
