Solid State Infrared Laser Devices.

Abstract

The objectives of the research are to carry out investigations of laser materials and devices operating in the spectral region between 2.0 and 2.4 micro m with the goal of obtaining efficient, high power continuous and repetitively Q-switched laser operation. The report describes the study of the applicability to 2.1 micro m laser devices of calcium erbium fluoride host (Ca2Er5F19) with Ho(3+) as an active ion and sensitized with Tm(3+). The program also included the growth and material properties studies of this crystal. Successful continuous and repetitively Q-switched laser operation satisfying some of the contract objectives has been obtained using this laser material. During the investigation certain problems associated with the above laser material have been uncovered and traced to some fundamental material properties, having to do with the apparent 'defect structure' of Ca2Er5F19.
