SUU-13/A Bomb Dispenser Design Improvement Program.

Abstract

The purpose of this program was to provide the Air Force with an improved SUU-13/A dispenser. The improved dispenser contains a redesigned cartridge and cylinder, a quick-release safety pallet, a solid-state intervalometer, and a stray voltage indicator. The cartridge assembly now has an integral high pressure chamber which allows only the low pressure gas from the cylinder to act on it. Previous designs had the high pressure gas from the high pressure chamber acting on the cartridge assembly which could cause failure of the threads holding the cartridge in the cylinder. The cylinder was modified to accept the new cartridge assembly. The quick-release safety pallet will contain munitions if inadvertent firing occurs. It can be removed by one man, without tools, in less than three seconds. The solid-state intervalometer provides greater accuracy, has more operational features such as insensitivity to short circuits or open circuits in the output firing load, a memory system to resume firing at the point at which it stopped when the firing circuit was interrupted, and faster firing rates (down to 0.025 sec), and is more reliable than the electromechanical intervalometer.
