4TH-Order Tensor Invariants and Geometric Representation

Abstract

First and second order invariants of 4th- order tensor are derived. Geometric representations analogous to Mohr's circle are presented to aid the visualization and operations of 4th-order tensors such as transformation, determination of principal direction and optimization procedures. The newly derived second order invariants may be considered as additional intrinsic material properties and may be used to simplify optimization of the physical properties of laminated composites.
