Snow Plow Investigations,
Abstract
For a number of years the Swedish Road Research Institute has carried out investigations on snow plows. In 1947 theoretical studies were begun concerning the relationship between the shape of a plow surface and its snow-casting ability as well as the force requirements of the plow. These theoretical studies were finished primarily in 1949, when the scale-model plow tests were begun. Model tests were continued until 1954. Along with the scale-model tests full-scale tests were made during the winters of 1949-1951 in Ostersund and Tuna-Hastberg. Some of the plows designed at the Institute were then manufactured for practical trials for the Department of Roadways and Waterways and personnel from the Road Research Institute studied the efficiency of these plows and tried to improve them during the years 1951-1960. The afore-mentioned studies were performed by road departments that had received the new plows, i.e. those road departments in the provinces of Kopparberg, Gavleborg, Jamtland, and Norrbotten. Test methods and results obtained are presented. (Author)
