Design Criteria for Non-Heat-Treated Welded Aluminum AFRPL Flanged Connectors.

Abstract

Work was initiated to investigate the fatigue problem and to determine the necessary design criteria for non-heat-treated welded aluminum AFRPL flanged connectors. This was accomplished through the following tasks: (1) the determination of a stress level to provide 200,000 vibration cycles for 3-inch aluminum flanged connectors with machined transition joints and with non-heat-treated welds, (2) the design and qualification testing of representative aluminum flanged connectors optimized for use with non-heat-treated welds, and (3) the revision of the aluminum flanged-connector specifications prepared under Contract AF 04(611)-11204 to include dimensions for lightweight connectors to be used with non-heat-treated welds. As a result of this work it is recommended that MS standards and specifications be prepared for cryogenic aluminum flanged connectors for welded and machined tubing through 8 inches in diameter for pressures up to 1500 psi. Additional developmental work is recommended in regard to 1000-psi. Additional developmental work is recommended in regard to 1000-psi and 1500-psi connectors for tubing through 16 inches in diameter. (Author)
