Automated Magnetic Tape Library System.
Abstract
The objectives of an automated magnetic tape library system are to eliminate, as much as practical, the need for a full-time tape librarian and to provide an accurate method of keeping track of tape assignments and usage. A new system of storing tapes in the library was developed and all record keeping of tape assignments was automated in December 1968. This was accomplished through the use of the existing Air Force Weapons Laboratory program tape system. Because of continuing tape quality problems, the development of a system to collect and analyze tape usage information was begun in January 1969. Simultaneously, the necessary action was taken to procure magnetic tape rehabilitation equipment. The culmination of this effort produced the automated system of 'managing' the tape library described in this report. (Author)
