Synthesis of Meta Carborane Intermediates.

Abstract

Several new closo-1,7-discarbadodecaborane-12 (herein referred to as 1,7-carborane) derivatives have been synthesized as intermediates in the preparation of phenylated polydquinoxaline carborane polymers. The following compounds were prepared and characterized: 1,7-mono(phenylacetyl)carborane,C6H5CH2COCB10H10CH; 1,7-bis(phenylacetyl)-carborane, C6H5CH2COCB10H10CCOCH2C6H5; and 1,7-diacetylcarborane CH3COCB10H10CCOCH3. These compounds were oxidized to the corresponding bis glyoxals by selenium dioxide. Purification of the glyoxals was a major problem and consequently only low molecular weight phenylated polyquinoxaline carborane polymer could be prepared. (Author)
