Advanced Survival Avionics System Study.

Abstract

The report covers Phase I of a three-phase program of research and study to define a new system to facilitate search for and recovery of downed air crew members. The objective of the study was to provide the gross definition of the requirements for an advanced survival avionics subsystem in terms of its operational parameters. The reported study consists of two major elements: Operational Analysis of the Search and Recovery Mission and Environment, and Systems Analysis of Requirements, Concepts and Equipment. The report contains the following investigations: Analysis of SAR operations; Definition of the logical structure of the search and recovery process; Projections of the operational environment of SAR; Development of representative SAR mission profiles; Definition of requirements for advanced SAR avionics; Analysis of VHF/UHF direction finding systems.
