Mounting of Axial Lead Electronic Components on Printed Wiring Boards.

Abstract

Axial lead electronic components are designed for mounting parallel to the principal plane of printed wiring boards so as to distribute mechanical stresses equally between the leads, and to take full advantage of conformal coatings or other materials to provide additional mechanical support. Under certain circumstances, principally because of packaging density, it may be desirable to mount axial lead components vertical to the plane of the printed wiring board. The purpose of the report is to outline the risks involved in such procedures, and to define the precautions to be taken when such procedures are to be utilized. (Author)
