Study for the Optimization of Continuous 'Whiskerizing'.
Abstract
The objective of this report is to optimize a continuous whiskerizing process for surface treatment of high modulus polyacrylonitrile-precursor graphite fiber; to establish and operate a resin prepregging line for the fiber produced from the process and to develop and characterize chopped fiber molding compounds based on the continuous whiskerized fiber. The continuous fiber whiskerizing process was optimized at a nominal 2% whisker content, which yielded about 10,000 psi interlaminar shear strength with a fiber tow wet strand strength of over 200,000 psi. Laminates of the prepregged fiber showed excellent edge compression strengths in either the unidirectional or chopped fiber random layup forms, exceeding the values obtained from manufacturer surface-treated fiber laminates.
