ATM-6 Telemetry Antenna System.

Abstract

A steerable UHF telemetry antenna system, designated the ATM-6, was developed at NWC for use at the Center's ground receiving stations. The system, which uses a six-foot-diameter reflector, is designed to operate in the recently assigned 1435-1540 and 2200-2300 MHz frequency ranges. It consists of a medium-gain pedestal-mounted antenna and a remote-control console. Included in the console is a dual-channel monopulse tracking receiver that provides steering information to the pedestal operation in the auto-track mode. The antenna is driven by solid-state servo amplifiers and DC servo motors; the basic drive mechanism of the antenna pedestal is the T9 radar portion of the T-38 antiaircraft fire control system. The size and weight of the pedestal make its installation relatively easy and readily adaptable to trailer mounting for use in portable ground stations. Operational tests have indicated that The system will provide acceptable performance in both auto-track and slave-track modes, and several units are presently being operated in the field. This report describes the construction of the ATM-6, the components used, and the principles of system operation. (Author)
